I come accross this note of explaination on what is Grounded Theory Approach in Research from a friend of my, Wan Muhammad Danial, who used this method for his disseration written in 2008. Please have a look on his explaination on this Methodology Approach.

Grounded Theory

Barner Glaser and Anselm Strauss (1965) are two socioligist who developed the technique of grounded theory and make it as a methodology for analyzing qualitative data.

According to Strouss and Corbin (1990), grounded theory was one that inductively driven from the study of the penomenon it represents. That is – it discovered, developed and provisionally verified through systematic data collection and analysis of data pertaining to the phenomenon. Therefore, data collection, analysis, and theory stands in reciprocal relationship with each other. One does not begin with theory, and then prove (or disproves it). Rather, one begins with an area of study and what is relevant to this area is allowed to emerge.

Its systematic technique and procedures of analysis enable the researher to develop a sustainable theory that meets the criteria for doing "good" science; significance, theory-observation compatibility, generalizability, reproducibility, precision, rigor, and verification. While the procedures are designed to give the analytic process precision and rigor, creativity is also an important element. This approach can be used by a person of any discipline or theoretical orientation desirous of developing a grounded theory.

Graphically, the approach works using the following mostly overlapping phase in the grounded theory as shown in this figure (please see in the attachement picture)

Greatings Fellow Researchers,

I would like to share with you my experience attending the Thomson Reuters DATASTREAM training program conducted yesterday.

Its an eye opener for those who are looking for access to data on companies and economic variables from many countries. I asked the librarian at KMC, INCEIF and they say we have one pc dedicated to datastream which is put near the KMC counter. Do ask them the exact location of the pc. There will be more training in the future on this so don't worry about missing this opportunity!!!

Here is a couple of pictures I managed to take while at the training center. Its really comfortable, wish that out doctoral launge would be like this.

Navitaging a researchable topic for a PhD project or dissertation

Fellow Researchers,
One the the most frequent problems faced by candidates prior their phd proposal or during the write-up is trying to identify their research topic, even myself, I had faced this unavoidable problem before. However, I managed so pull myself up with the help of my supervisor (SV: Dato' Dr. Kamaruddin Sharif) and focus on a proper topic that will be my phd thesis. Here I would like to share my experience and some tips on how to go about navigating your topic finding in your dissertation. I would like to thank you for spending time away from reading your articles and going to some of my tips. Here goes and hope it will benefit you (this tips also be helpful to those who already firm with their topic by giving some pointers on highlighting some management tips in improving your framework).

First and foremost I would like you guys to read this article which I believe will help you. Please go thru it.

Navitaging a topic in an academic phd project / dissertation -

Secondly, always have a good management of your articles and references that you have collected. For me, I use a systematic numerical coding to track my citations from articles that I read for my literature review. You also need to work on using mindmaps to easily track down your important notes from your reading. Previously I used thumbnotes and sticky notes that I posted at the pages of my articles but it seems to fall of easily and when I lost it, I will spend pointless time to track it down back. Here is an overview of what I had prepared using my MindMap software.

Finally, the fun part is that, ALWAYS, try to meet up with your collegues during the support group and discussed your work and spend time with them to talk about research ideas. Sometimes it will be good to go out of your lonely cubicle and discuss matter concerning the research framework and research methods. I am not forcing this to anyone as many of us are concern about maintaining a secrative lives to avoid people to copy down our work and us it as theirs. Yes, its true that you wanted to maintained your claim on what you have developed as it is not a published work and the thoughts of other people simply copied your novel framework. But as candidates of doctoral philopsphy, our thrust on others of the same level of thinking must be respected you must make your work to be of benefit to the knowledge. If you cannot trust others, how will others trust your work!!! How will knowledge be expanded if you keep it to yourself and wait till the end when you finished defending it (VIVA). This is my two-cents.

Here is some tips on how to share the knowledge of your thesis with others (professionally)
a) When you have a support group that is committed to listen to you, you to must show you committment by giving a good comments and show interest of other member's thesis work.
b) During a discussion, it would be worth that someone in the group to take down notes of discussion and to share it with others so that we will know about certain progress was achieved and it makes the discussion matters to everyone
c) In every meeting, each member of the group must spend at least 10 minutes on their update on their research work (we can share on a summary of what has been done on the research work since the last meeting, or points on new findings from articles we have read that concerns with our literature review)
d) It would be nice to include in the support group meeting a special session on discussion methodology and technique of improving our research writing or even reading together an article that talks about phd dissertation writing style.
e) Lastly, be supportive to each other and try to make the best of every day to share knowledge with members. If you put good intention of helping others to conduct research better, you also help yourself to be a better person in research and you will see yourself that you are becoming a phd candidate.

I hope that this tips would be useful to you as you progress in your dissertation writing, insyallah. SHARING IS CARING.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the INCEIF’s Inaugural Public Lecture by Dr Abbas Mirakhor, a distinguished scholar and the first holder of the INCEIF Chair of Islamic Finance. The INCEIF Public Lecture Series aims to provide a forum for promoting intellectual engagement to discuss the issues, developments and challenges in the area of Islamic finance.

The global financial crisis that has dominated the headlines across the world for more than two years has brought to the forefront the fundamental issues in the international financial system that need to be addressed. Now, as the growth prospect resumes, the debate is focussed on the priorities and direction needed to reshape the post crisis world to ensure that the recovery will be sustainable.

While Islamic finance has demonstrated its resilience during this period, the industry is now entering into an environment that is fundamentally different in this post crisis era. The international financial reform agenda will result in new structures, standards and regulatory regimes for the global financial industry. Greater financial inter-linkages and integration will also require greater cooperation and collaboration in the endeavour to preserve global financial stability.

In this environment, the foundations for the sustainability for Islamic finance as a competitive form of financial intermediation will need to continue to be strengthened. Efforts are therefore being focussed on the further development of Islamic financial markets, the financial infrastructure, research and development to support innovation, and enhancing the legal, regulatory and supervisory framework. In addition, the adoption of the relevant advances in technology and the development of human capital are also key to support the development of Islamic finance. The ongoing efforts in these areas are aimed towards enhancing further the resilience of Islamic finance which would in turn enhance its potential to contribute towards global financial stability and the prospects for global growth. Indeed, the topic of the INCEIF’s Public Lecture today, “Paradigm Change in Shaping the Future of Islamic Finance” is timely for us to deliberate and reflect on the issues confronting Islamic finance moving forward.

We are indeed honoured today to have Dr Abbas Mirakhor. Dr Abbas joins INCEIF following a long and distinguished career as an economist and academician with considerable contribution in the field of Islamic economics, finance and banking. Dr Abbas started his academic career in 1968 with University of Alabama, in the United States of America as a Professor of Economics and later at the Florida Institute of Technology. In 1984, he joined the IMF in Washington DC as an economist before serving as the organisation’s Executive Director and Dean of its Executive Board. He completed his term at the IMF in 2008.

Dr Abbas is also the recipient of several awards from several governments and from the Islamic Development Bank, he received the Annual Prize for Research in Islamic Economics in recognition of his service in advancing the knowledge in Islamic finance. He has published books and research articles on a wide range of areas including microeconomic theory, mathematical economics and Islamic economics.

During his tenure at INCEIF, Dr. Abbas will also engage in research and consultancy in on Islamic finance, including guiding academic research and supervising dissertations and theses of INCEIF students. He will also present lectures abroad organised by INCEIF as part of the efforts to strengthen the international alliances that have been established with INCEIF from other centres of learning in other parts of the world. His appointment as the inaugural holder of INCEIF Chair of Islamic Finance would certainly give INCEIF the opportunity to raise its capacity to become a world class learning institution dedicated to Islamic Finance. Dr Abbas valuable knowledge and insights and his extensive experience in both academia and at the IMF, will benefit and enhance the knowledge and expertise of INCEIF graduates as well as the academia and financial community.

Since its establishment in 2006, INCEIF has grown from strength to strength and has been recording a steady increase in the number of students for its three programmes, the Chartered Islamic Finance Professional or the CIFP, Masters in Islamic Finance and PhD in Islamic Finance. The first batch of CIFP graduates received their scrolls in February 2009 and all 32 have gained employment or have continued their studies further. This year, INCEIF will see the first batch of Masters in Islamic Finance graduate and next year will see the first batch of students to graduate from the PhD programme. This is indeed a significant milestone for INCEIF that is achieved in such a short period of time.

As the Chancellor of INCEIF, it is my hope that the setting up of the INCEIF Chair of Islamic Finance will contribute to the development of expertise of the academic faculty and students at INCEIF in addition to expanding further understanding of Islamic Finance by the financial community. Please join me in welcoming Dr Abbas Mirakhor to deliver his lecture.

Seven Ways to Tell if Your Suit Fits

1. Shoulder pads end with your shoulders.

2. Your flat hand should slip easily into your suit under the lapels when the top (or middle) button is fastened. If you put a fist in, the suit should pull at the button.

3. The top button of a two-button suit -- or the middle button of a three-button suit -- should not fall below your navel.

4. With your arms at your sides, your knuckles should be even with the bottom of your jacket.

5. Jacket sleeves should fall where the base of your thumb meets your wrist.

6. Between a quarter and a half inch of shirt cuff should be visible.

7. One inch of break.

PhD Support Group

There can be as many as 12 people who have expressed interest to join a PhD support group. This is a very appropriate number of members to move as a support group.

For those who are full-time and new to take the PhD can join in passively.

There are two levels of participation:
(1) Join the mailing list, or Internet-group such at Google group (Individual pacting).

(2) Join as an intensive member, i.e. there must be a pact (promise with other members), rules on the group, and presentation. The benefits of creating the support group is for 'Support', like cheering team, because humans are difficult to move forward alone, and to be strong when other people with us. This group will move the members and help them to be stable, and the group communication is 90% (meeting up) and 10% of the online meeting (i.e. Skype, online chat). Lastly do not worry about arranging frequent meetings because the meeting up only when everyone agrees to come. (thats where online group works!!!). However when you have a meeting up, make it the most productive one by having agendas before the actualy meeting. Usually the meeting up agendas usually comprise of discussion on problems of research, discussion on the difficulty writing the dissertation, discussion on what was discuss with supervisors, or discussion on article for literature review (wow!! thats a lot of agenda to cover for a meeting). Be curtious about time of others when the meeting is on-going, don't spend more time for one member and then other member missed their chance to talk about their problem. "Sharing is Caring!!!"

Here is a summary of the functions of the support group:
Mutual learning and teaching research and the consequences of writing a thesis requires the members to group together and have a pact (promise) to do the small steps that need to be prepared to share management tips on the thesis writing, what works and what does not work - and encouraging members to complete the PhD on-time.

To join an online group, one suggestion is to select Facebook group because I see it quite easy and simple and many people on facebook already. This group is open discussion, and your commets can be viewed. For those who are shy, you can find a new facebook id and join under an alternate second id.

Another suggestion is to create a Google group (this one we have done before for our classes at INCEIF). Then everyone may contribute.

Now, its all up to you. The quicker you move forward and have a group pact (promise), the better you feel to complete the PhD journey. I wish you all the best.

The impact factor, often abbreviated IF, is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published in science and social science journals.

What benefit do I get from this information?
When you want to submit your article to publisher, you will have information on the level of competency and their impact based on the scoring of the Impact Factor. The higher the rate on the journal, the more quality and significance the journal that you want to send your articles.

It also can be used as a tool to analyze the publishing performance and impact of researchers in that particular journal.

لقد سبق ظهور المصارف الإسلامية عدة معالم أساسية جعل ظهورها أمراً مقضياً وذلك لرفع الحرج عن المسلمين , من هذه المعالم تحديات الاستعمار المصرفي الربوى فى البلاد الإسلامية ، فمنذ سنة 1924م حين أعلن فى تركيا ضياع الخلافة الإسلامية ، بعد أن ضعفت الأمة الإسلامية عقائدياً وخلقياً واجتماعياً واقتصادياً وسياسياً وأصبحت فرقاً شتى كان سهلاً على الاستعمار الغربي أن يحتلها واحدة بعد الأخرى وتطبيق مفاهيمه ونظمه الربوية بدلاً من مفاهيم ونظم الإسلام ، بدأ هذا الاستعمار يشجع الملوك والرؤساء والأمراء على الاقتراض بفوائد فأنشأ الكثير من المشروعات الربوية لاستنزاف أموال المسلمين ، فكان الفقير والغنى يبيع محصول القطن ويذهب به إلى المرابي لسداد ما عليه من قروض ، وظل الوضع على هذا المنوال حتى أصبح المسيطر على الاقتصاد وأموال البلاد الإسلامية هم طبقة المرابين ومعظمهم من اليهود ، وغرق الملوك والرؤساء فى الديون المقترضة فى ملذاتهم وشهواتهم ، كما غرق العديد من الناس فى الديون التي كانوا يتعاملون بها مع المرابين . 4 ـ إنشاء الاتحاد الدولي للبنوك الإسلامية سنة 1977م . 4 of the International Federation of the Islamic banks in 1977.

5 ـ إنشاء المعهد الدولي للبنوك الإسلامية والاقتصاد الإسلامي بقبرص 1981م . 5 of the International Institute for Islamic banks and Islamic economy in Cyprus in 1981.

وفيما يلي نبذة موجزة عن طبيعة كل تجربة من التجارب السابقة . The following is a brief overview of the nature of each experience from past experiences.

لقد اتفق رؤساء مجالس المصارف الإسلامية على إنشاء الاتحاد الدولي للبنوك الإسلامية وذلك فى سنة 1397هـ / 1977م ويهدف إلى دعم الروابط بين المصارف الإسلامية وتوثيق أواصر التعاون بينها والتنسيق بين نشاطاتها وتأكيد طابعها الإسلامي تحقيقاً لمصالحها المشتركة ودعماً لأهدافها فى تطبيق قواعد ونظم المعاملات الإسلامية فى المجتمع ، والمقر الرئيسي للاتحاد مكة المكرمة وله أمانة فى القاهرة ومكاتب فرعية فى بعض البلدان الإسلامية ، ومازال هذا الاتحاد موجوداً حتى الآن ولكن لم يباشر نشاطة . نظرا ًللنمو المضطرد فى عدد المصارف الإسلامية وزيادة عملياتها فقد احتاجت إلى عنصر بشرى يجمع بين سلوك المسلم وبين الخبرة والكفاءة ، ولقد عجزت الجامعات العربية الإسلامية أن تخرج ذلك العنصر ، لذلك رأى القائمون على أمر الاتحاد الدولي للبنوك الإسلامية إنشاء المعهد الدولي للبنوك والاقتصاد الإسلامي، ولقد شارك فى تأسيسه معظم الجامعات العربية والإسلامية وكذلك العديد من الهيئات والمؤسسات الإسلامية ، ولقد اختيرت الدولة القبرصية التركية الاتحادية مقراً له لأغراض سياسية . ب ـ التوصل إلى بلورة المنهج الاقتصادي الإسلامي . To develop a curriculum Islamic economic.

جـ تكوين مدرسة الاقتصاد الإسلامي . A composition of the Islamic School of Economics.

د ـ وضع الضوابط العلمية والعملية للمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية . D development of scientific and practical controls of Islamic financial institutions.

هـ ـ تشجيع الدراسات والبحوث فى مجال الاقتصاد والمصارف الإسلامية . E encourage studies and research in the field of economics and Islamic banks.

ولقد باشر المعهد أعماله منذ 1401هـ وساهم فى تدريب وإعداد الكثير من الأجيال التي ساهمت فى تطوير وتنمية العمل فى المصارف الإسلامية ، ولكن بعد فترة من إنشائه توقف لأسباب سياسية ومالية ، ومما يجب أن يذكر فى هذا المقام أنه يوجد فى بعض المصارف الإسلامية مراكز تدريب على الأعمال المصرفية الإسلامية . لقد أنشأت الهيئة العليا للفتوى والرقابة الشرعية للمصارف الإسلامية سنة 1403هـ ، وعقدت أول اجتماع لها يوم الأربعاء 30 جمادى الثانية من نفس السنة وقد تم الاتفاق على أن يكون أعضاء الهيئة هم رؤساء هيئات الرقابة بالمصارف والمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية الأعضاء بالاتحاد الدولي للبنوك الإسلامية كما يضم إليها خمسة آخرون يختارون من بين العلماء الثقات على مستوى العالم الإسلامي . & ـ مراقبة أنشطة البنوك والمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية الأعضاء بالاتحاد للتأكد من التزامها بأحكام الشريعة الإسلامية وتنبيه الجهات المعنية بما قد يظهر فى هذه الأنشطة من مخالفة لهذه الأحكام , وللهيئة فى سبيل ممارسة هذا الاختصاص حق الإطلاع على قوانين ولوائح البنوك والمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية الأعضاء وعلى النماذج والعقود . & Control the activities of banks and financial institutions of the Islamic Union member states to ensure compliance with the provisions of Islamic Sharia and to alert interested parties, may appear in these activities in violation of these provisions, and the Authority for the exercise of such jurisdiction the right to review the laws and regulations of banks and financial institutions and the Member on the forms and contracts.

& ـ إبداء الرأي الشرعي فى المسائل المصرفية والمالية التي تطلبها البنوك أو المؤسسات المالية الإسلامية الأعضاء بالاتحاد وهيئات الرقابة الشرعية بها أو الأمانة العامة للاتحاد . Forensic & opinion in banking and financial required by banks or financial institutions, EU member and the Islamic Shariah or the Secretariat of the Union.

& ـ النظر فيما تعرضه عليها الهيئات والمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية من أمور تتصل بالمعاملات المالية والمصرفية وإبداء الرأي الشرعي فيها . & Consider offering them the bodies and institutions of Islamic financial matters relating to financial transactions, banking and the legal opinion.

& ـ تكون قرارات وفتاوى الهيئة ملزمة للبنوك والمؤسسات المالية الإسلامية الأعضاء بالاتحاد إذا صدرت بالإجماع ، وللبنك أو المؤسسة العضو حق طلب إعادة العرض على الهيئة بمذكرة تفصيلية . & The decisions and advisory opinions of the binding on the banks and financial institutions of the Islamic Union member if issued unanimously, and the bank or institution member of the right to request re-submission to the Commission a detailed note.

أما فى حالة الاختلاف فلكل بنك أن يأخذ أي الرأيين ما لم تقرر الهيئة أن المصلحة تقتضى الإلزام . In the event of disagreement, every bank to take any opinions unless the Commission decides that the interest required binding.

& ـ التصدي لبيان الأحكام الشرعية للمسائل الاقتصادية التي جدت عليها وتقوم عليها مصالح ضرورية فى البلاد الإسلامية . & A statement addressing the legal rulings of the economic issues that you found them and it is necessary in the interests of the Muslim countries.

ولقد ساهمت الهيئة العليا للفتوى والرقابة الشرعية فى مساعدة المصارف الإسلامية الجديدة , وفى بث الثقة فى أعمال المصارف الإسلامية ، ولكن توقف نشاطها لأسباب معينة ، وقامت كل مجموعة بنوك إسلامية بإنشاء هيئة للفتوى والرقابة الشرعية مثل مجموعة بنوك فيصل الإسلامية, ومجموعة بنك دله البركة الإسلامية ، ومجموعة بنوك السودان الإسلامية وهكذا . Have contributed to the advisory opinion of the Supreme Sharia in helping the new Islamic banks, and in instilling confidence in the work of Islamic banks, but ceased operations due to certain reasons, and each group Islamic banks to set up an advisory opinion of the Sharia, such as a bank, Faisal Islamic Bank and Dallah Al Baraka Group, the Islamic Group Sudan Islamic banks and so on.

هناك العديد من المؤشرات والأدلة تؤكد أن المستقبل إن شاء الله سيكون للمصارف الإسلامية من هذه المؤشرات ما يلي : There are many indicators and evidence suggests that the future will be, God willing, Islamic banks of these indicators as follows:

3 ـ قيام البنوك الربوية بإنشاء فروعاً لها تعمل وفقاً لأحكام الشريعة الإسلامية . 3 a riba-based banks to establish branches operating in accordance with the provisions of Islamic Sharia.

4 ـ قيام بعض البنوك الأجنبية بإنشاء فروعاً لها تعمل وفقاً لأحكام الشريعة الإسلامية مثل بنك : تشيس الأهلي ، وسيتي بنك الأمريكي . 4 that some foreign banks to establish branches operating in accordance with the provisions of Islamic law such as a bank: Chase National Bank and CitiBank.

5 ـ قيام بعض البنوك الأجنبية بإنشاء بنوكاً إسلامية مستقلة . 5 that some foreign banks to establish an independent Islamic banks.

6 ـ اعتراف الحكومات العربية والإسلامية بالمصارف الإسلامية كواقع ، كما قامت بعض الدول العربية بإصدار تشريع خاص بها ينظم علاقتها بالبنك المركزي كما هو الحال فى السودان وإيران وباكستان والإمارات والكويت . 6 recognition by Governments of the Arab and Islamic Banks Islamic reality, and some Arab countries issue their own legislation governing its relationship with the Central Bank as is the case in Sudan, Iran, Pakistan, UAE and Kuwait.

7 ـ بدأت بعض الجامعات العربية والإسلامية الاهتمام بالدراسات والبحوث فى مجال الاقتصاد الإسلامى والمصارف الإسلامية ، وأخذ ذلك صيغاً عدة منها : 7 started in some universities the Arab and Islamic interest in studies and research in the field of Islamic economics and Islamic banks, and taken several formats, including:

Dr Abbas Mirakhor joins INCEIF as the First Holder of INCEIF Chair of Islamic Finance

INCEIF today welcomes Dr Abbas Mirakhor as the First Holder of INCEIF Chair of Islamic Finance. A former Executive Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and acknowledged worldwide as a specialist in Islamic finance, Dr Abbas joins INCEIF following a distinguished career as an economist and academician with considerable contribution in the field of Islamic economics, finance and banking.
INCEIF students and staff can look forward to Dr Abbas's lectures. He will provide leadership in research and consultancy leading towards seminal publications on Islamic finance, assist in academic research and provide consultation on dissertations and theses. He will also present lectures abroad on behalf of INCEIF as part of the efforts to create further awareness on INCEIF and its programmes.

Dr Abbas Mirakhor
Dr Abbas is a graduate of the Kansas State University, USA, where he received his Bachelor, Master and PhD Degrees in Economics. In 1968, he started his academic career with University of Alabama, USA. With the exception of a 2-year stint at the AzZahara University in Tehran, Iran, throughout his academic career, Dr Abbas has worked as a Professor of Economics at the University of Alabama, Alabama A&M University, and the Florida Institute of Technology. In 1984, he joined the IMF in Washington DC as an economist. He spent 24 years with the IMF, serving as the organisation's Executive Director and Dean of the Executive Board, retiring in 2008.
Dr Abbas was conferred the "Order of Companion of Volta" for service to Ghana by the President of Ghana in 2005. In 2003, he received the Islamic Development Bank Annual Prize for Research in Islamic Economics, which he shared with Dr Mohsin Khan, another well-known economist at IMF. The President of Pakistan conferred him the "Quaid-e Azam" star for service to Pakistan in 1997.
He has published books, papers and research articles on a wide range of areas including microeconomic theory, mathematical economics and Islamic economics. His latest publications are "Islam and Development: The Institutional Framework" which was co-authored with Dr. Idris Samawi Hamid, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University, USA; and "Globalization and Islamic Finance: Convergence, Prospects and Challenges" co-authored with Prof. Hossein Askari of the George Washington University and Dr. Zamir Iqbal of the World Bank.

Intellectual Discourse on Riba and Islamic Finance

Riba (i.e. interest) for simplication exist in the following cirsumstances:
- a battening onto the poor society;
- a general shift of resources from the poor to the very rich;
- a stulification and distortion of the market mechanisms by giving a return to those who have not produced; diminishing the consuming capacity of those who borrow; shifting resources to morbid capital.

However, we have identified two broad arguments made by some scholar in favour of interest (sadly):
a) it is a return for those who own money and who lend it to those who do not have it;
b) the time value of money doctrine - if you are given money now then it is an advantage (rather than having to wait to save) becaue the money can be invested at interest.

This arise some intelectual discourse to identify which direction does Islamic banks would go on.

This is a summary of the presentation I attended today at INCEIF. PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION DURING FINANCIAL CRISIS: Analysis of the Islamic Asset Allocation Strategy By Chair Professor Professor Dr. Jahangit Sultan (Ph.D. Economics) University Bently

Conclusion: 1. Islamic asset allocation strategy very good performance during regular economic times and TOP performance during times of financial turmoil. 2. These firms have low leverage, high asset backing, 'safety' factors, low credit risk. Note: Companies with low debt (highly rated in Credit Rating) are less in default risk.

Questions: What guidence can get from this excercise?

Answer: Central banks or regulators must regulate leverage gains.

The event was a success with huge turnout (The event promotion was done with minimal advertising - using Facebooking and Tweetering - the new medium for communication and networking). No participating fees was charged.

I was astound by a talk given by a professor how tought at Oxford at my university early this year. Al-Kitti is an amazing person and very humble.

He begins his talks by reciting a doa that includes asking protection from Allah on ourselves and families, and he also includes our teachers how have teach us with knowledge and guide us to become how we are today.

Al-Kitti is a Malaysian (born in Kuala Terengannu) and currently teaches Islamic civilisation at Oxford University. Do see his full profile here.

Al Baraka 30th Symposium on Islamic Economics, 26-27 August 2009, Jeddah

This annual scholars conference was attended by many muslim scholars in diverse background (ie Islamic economics, Syariah, Islamic banking). Most interestingly, the symposium started the discussion between after sholat Terawih until time for Sahur (the muslim time to eat before start of time for fasting).

Among the programs held was the Majma' Fiqh OIC Muzakarah and the Annual Shariah AAOIFI Conference. Major topics of discussion was Derivatives and Applicability yo Islamic Finance, Islamic Insurance Bond and Accepting Secular Law in Islamic Finance Regulatory Framework.

As the Malaysian banking system remain robust and prudent to the regulatory requirements during the turbulent times of credit crunch that hit other financial system in the world, thanks to a well strategies and comprehensive supervisory work done by our central bank, another great accomplishment have been achieved this year by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) which successfully introduced the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 701 (Year 2009) and with the coming into force of this Act today (on 25 November 2009), the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 1958 is repealed and thus, ceases to apply.

From my observation on the new Act that is to be observe by both the conventional and Islamic banks in Malaysia, one of the perspective of this act is to ensure financial stability of the banking system and quoting from Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia in her statement today on emphasizing the role of BNM thru this act by "adequately capture and pre-emptively address sources of risks to financial stability."

Another important note that was featured in the Governor's statement on the Act was the recognition to Islamic financial system in Malaysia by providing legal foundation for its development in the overall Malaysian financial system. This is another important development that would fasten the accomplishment its mandate to Government of Malaysia in promoting Malaysia as an international centre for Islamic finance.

The 3rd Islamic Financial Service Board (IFSB) Public Lecture was held on 23 November in Kuala Lumpur and was officiated by its host, Governor of Central Bank of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Zeti. 2 lectures were delivered and the main theme was on financial stability and the need for delivering a change in the standards in regulating Islamic Finance to ensure the financial system will be ready to face future financial crisis.

The event also marks the first ever official function in the new Bank Negara facility, Sasana Kijang, to host such important function and have put participant to awe the eyes on the magnificent architecture that integrates both modern technology and art. Sasana Kijang will accomodate the new office for IFSB and SEACEN (South East Asian Central Banks) Research and Training.

Prof. Rifaat Ahmed Abdel Karim, the Secretary General of Islamic Financial Services Board, also gives his opening remark for the event.

Scholars from all over the muslim countries have gathered together in the 4th International Shariah Conference held in Malaysia on 18 to 20 November 2009 to bring their expertise in discussing the current plight in Islamic finance.

The event ends with members urging for a positive direction to be taken in providing better principles and guidelines for improvements in the methodology for the deriving Islamic finance products and to ensure that the markets will have an indepth understanding and persistency in ensuring well regulated shariah principles that not only focus on the forms of the instruments but also brings upon the substance that projects the elements of Islamic virtues.
